Balazs
makes very interesting observations about the nature of sound films in her
article; as she puts it, the world’s sounds comprise a symphony of noise we
aren’t trained to take the time to notice. Because of our visual association
with sounds, deeply rooted into our mind’s concepts of them, we are usually unable
to divorce them from the actual sensation of audibly perceiving it. Balazs also
made an interesting note about how visuals and sounds can work together in less
traditional uses: for example, she describes how showing a composer’s facial
expressions in juxtaposition with the music weaving into the air can cast light
on the music itself, in that it gives us a different way to interpret it.
